Are Your New Year’s Resolutions Still Alive?
I’m reading one of the latest posts at Dumb Little Man’s Tips for Life and a post about keeping your 2008 resolutions caught my eye. I think one of the most common problems is when we make our resolutions, we compile a “wish list” more than a “to-do list”. That and we probably have more than 5 goals we would like to achieve this year.
Having many goals is great but if you’re not great at multitasking and organizing achieving all your year’s resolution will prove to be quite a daunting task. Dumb Little Man listed the following tips to keep your resolution more realizable:
* Setting up milestones
* Keeping track of your goals through easily noticeable notes and/or post-its
* Join a support group
* Realize your mistake and learn from it
I’d say, if you prepared a list last year and never went past number 1, learning from it, this year you should take baby steps. Instead of having five goals that you will have difficulty keeping track of, list one or two goals that you are very determined to do this year. Would you like to lose that last ten pounds, finally get rid of your credit card debt or learn how to knit? It’s up to you, resolutions don’t need to be this big life altering moments all at once.
Next, think “realizable”. If you are fifty pounds overweight and you’ve been this way for years, don’t be frustrated if you don’t shed those excess love handles in just twelve months. Though there are so many diet plans being touted around television, print and the internet, the key to long-lasting weight loss is sustainability. If you want to lose fifty pounds, start with one pound and work your way to fifty. There is no quick fixes to our goals, we have to work hard at it to make it last.
Lastly, before you make any more 2008 New Year’s resolution you have to think back at the year that has just past, take stock of what you have, where you are and what or which things and opportunities will lead you to accomplish your current year’s resolution. You can’t drive a car from point A to point B if you don’t have fuel in the tank or a charged hybrid engine, right? So, you can’t expect to be able to pay off your credit card debt if you don’t put aside extra money or find other ways to earn extra money or have the ability to shave off from your current expenditures.
